As we approach the arrival of the 2030 Bilingual Nation, are our children ready?
After twelve years of compulsory national education, can our children in Taiwan speak English? Do they dare to speak English? According to the latest research and statistics, one in four elementary and junior high school students in Taiwan lags behind in English vocabulary learning. In remote areas, 70% of children fall behind in English as early as elementary school. In the university entrance basic academic test, an average of 10,000 students each year turn in blank English writing sections. After twelve years of hard work, our children are left with wounded hearts.
Seventy years ago, we learned KK phonetic symbols; twenty years ago, we learned phonics; a few years ago, we adopted CLIL, integrating language and subject learning. And at this very moment, native English speakers in the Western Hemisphere are using "Science of Reading (SoR)"—a brain-based approach—to educate their next generation, learning English in the sequence that best suits how the brain processes information.
The Science of Reading (SoR) is a gentle revolution launched for the sake of children's language acquisition. We invite you to walk alongside us on this journey.
What is the Science of Reading (SoR) approach to language learning?
